Staples, Inc. Acquires Office Depot, Inc.

Framingham, Mass. & Boca Raton, Fla. — Staples, Inc. and Office Depot, Inc. have entered into a definitive agreement under which Staples will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Office Depot.

Staples began discussions to acquire Office Depot in September 2014. The agreement has been unanimously approved by each company’s board of directors.

Joe’s Jeans CEO Resigns

Los Angeles — Marc Crossman has tendered his resignation as president and chief executive officer of Joe’s Jeans Inc. In conjunction with his resignation, Crossman will be transitioning to a consulting position with the company. Samuel Joseph Furrow, Jr. (Jay Furrow) will serve as interim CEO.

Von Maur To Open Third Location in Georgia

Davenport, Iowa — Von Maur Department Store plans to open a 165,000-square-foot store at the Mall of Georgia in Buford, Ga. Scheduled to open in fall 2016, the store will be the company's third location in Georgia.

Walmart Opening 11 Supercenters Across Canada in January 2015

Mississauga, ON — Walmart Canada will open 11 supercenters by January 29, 2015, completing its expansion for the company's current fiscal year ending January 31, 2015. These completed real estate projects bring Walmart Canada's total store count to 394 stores, including 280 supercenters and 114 discount stores.

The Home Depot Names New Chairman

Atlanta — The Home Depot’s board of directors has elected its CEO and president, Craig Menear, as chairman, effective February 2. He will succeed Frank Blake, who will retire as chairman.

Target To Pull Out of Canada

Minneapolis — Target Corporation plans to abandon its expansion into Canada less than 2 years after launch.

The company is shutting all of its 133 Canadian stores and expects to report about $5.4 billion in pre-tax losses for its fourth quarter, which finishes at the end of January.

Tanger Outlets Plans Outlet Center Near Memphis

Greensboro, N.C. — Tanger Factory Outlet Centers, Inc., plans to develop Tanger Outlets Memphis in partnership with Poag Shopping Centers, LLC. The partnership will commence construction immediately and open for the 2015 holiday season. The partners plan to initially deliver approximately 310,000 square feet of space to house around 70 upscale brand name and designer outlet stores. The site can accommodate future expansion to a total footprint of approximately 410,000 square feet of outlet and other retail uses.
