Albertsons to Buy Rite Aid

Boise, Idaho — Boise, Idaho-based grocery chain Albertsons Cos. has agreed to acquire Rite Aid Corp., one of the nation’s largest drugstore chains, for an undisclosed sum. The integrated company will operate about 4,900 locations, 4,350 pharmacy counters, and 320 clinics across 38 states and Washington, D.C., serving more than 40 million customers per week.

Franke Foodservice Systems Acquires Facility Solutions, Inc.

Smyrna, Tenn. — Franke Foodservice Systems, the global equipment and supplies solutions provider based in Smyrna, Tenn., has acquired Facility Solutions, Inc. (FSI), a project management firm serving national restaurant and retail chains. FSI will continue to serve these customers from its offices in Clinton Township, Mich., complementing Franke’s own business in supporting large-scale facility improvement programs for global restaurant brands.

KBS Completes Acquisition of Empire Services

Oceanside, Calif. — Kellermeyer Bergensons Services, LLC (KBS), the largest provider of technology-enabled, integrated interior and exterior property services to multi-site and multi-region customers in North America, has completed the acquisition of Empire Services (Empire), an independently owned commercial facility maintenance company headquartered in New Orleans. The transaction closed on December 29, 2017.

Deep Green Waste & Recycling Acquires CARE

Marietta, Ga. — Deep Green Waste & Recycling Inc. has successfully closed the acquisition of Compaction and Recycling Equipment Inc. (CARE). CARE has been in business since 1977. It designs, engineers, fabricates, installs, finances or rents, and services waste equipment.

KBS Completes Acquisition of Varsity Facility Services

Oceanside, Calif. — Kellermeyer Bergensons Services, LLC (KBS), the largest provider of technology-enabled, integrated interior and exterior property services to retailers, grocers and multi-site customers in North America, has purchased Varsity Facility Services, a leading facility services provider in the U.S. and Canada. Varsity will join KBS as an operating division and will continue to utilize the Varsity brand.

Seattle — Starbucks Corporation has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the remaining 50% share of its East China (East China JV) business from joint venture partners, Uni-President Enterprises Corporation (UPEC) and President Chain Store Corporation (PCSC) for approximately $1.3 billion in cash consideration in the largest single acquisition in the company’s history.

Staples To Be Acquired For Approximately $6.9 Billion

Framingham, Mass., and New York City — On June 29, 2017, Staples, Inc. and Sycamore Partners, a leading private equity firm, entered into a merger agreement in which investment funds managed by Sycamore Partners will acquire Staples for approximately $6.9 billion. 

Amazon to Acquire Whole Foods Market for $13.7 Billion

Seattle — Online retail giant Amazon has agreed to acquire high-end grocery chain Whole Foods Market Inc. for $13.7 billion. The all-cash transaction amounts to $42 per share and includes the Austin, Texas-based grocer’s net debt. Whole Foods Market will continue to operate stores under the Whole Foods Market brand. John Mackey will remain CEO of Whole Foods Market, and the company’s headquarters will remain in Austin.

Sprague Pest Solutions Acquires TMC Pest Management

Tacoma, Wash. — Sprague Pest Solutions has acquired TMC Pest Management of Bakersfield, Calif., expanding the fifth-generation company into California and giving it the ability to serve commercial clients from Washington state to Southern California. TMC will operate under the Sprague Pest Solutions brand immediately.

Panera Bread To Be Sold For $7.5 Billion

St. Louis — Panera Bread Company and JAB have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which JAB will acquire Panera for approximately $7.5 billion. The agreement has been unanimously approved by Panera's board of directors.

Darden Restaurants To Acquire Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen for $780 Million

Orlando, Fla. — Darden Restaurants, Inc. has agreed to acquire Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen (Cheddar's) for $780 million in an all-cash transaction. Cheddar's will add to Darden's portfolio of differentiated brands, which currently includes Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Yard House, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Bahama Breeze and Eddie V's.

Gordon Brothers To Acquire Wet Seal

Boston — Gordon Brothers plans to acquire the Wet Seal retail brand. Launched in 1990, Wet Seal is known for its surf-and-sun aesthetic for fashion-focused teens. The acquisition also includes other brands within the Wet Seal portfolio such as Arden B, Blink, Chic Boutique and several others. The transaction is pending final court approval.
