Muir & Westwood Begin Large Retail Solar Project

Minneapolis—The first of four planned solar projects in the Woodbury Village Shopping Center was commissioned this week.

Minneapolis—The first of four planned solar projects in the Woodbury Village Shopping Center was commissioned this week.  Woodbury Village is located in Woodbury, Minn.

Robert Muir Company, a developer, and manager of shopping centers across the state, commissioned the 10 kilowatt (kW) solar array that sits atop The Shoppes of Woodbury Village, which is situated on the east end of the shopping complex. The commissioning completes the first phase of a 130 kW solar roll-out with three 40 kW projects set for construction in 2011. The remaining solar projects will be installed on the Woodbury Village and Woodbury Village Green Shopping Centers. Robert Muir Company chose Westwood to manage these projects and their solar program.

According to Muir’s vice president of construction, Rick Schroeder, the company hopes to incorporate renewable energy into more of its properties and implement other energy saving improvements as well. Such efforts lower the tenants’ common area costs, he says, and are good for the environment.

When completed, the combined projects will represent the largest solar energy generation system on any shopping center in the upper Midwest, and will rank among the largest of all solar projects in Minnesota.

Robert C. Muir established the Robert Muir Company in California in 1959. Robert Muir Company, a  shopping center development, management and leasing company, now based in Minnesota, has a current portfolio of just under 2 million square feet of retail space.
