Deerfield, IL — Walgreens had March 2011 sales of $6.28 billion, an increase of 7.6% from $5.83 billion for the same month in 2010. Duane Reade stores, acquired in April 2010, contributed 2.8 percentage points to the total sales increase for the month.
Total front-end sales increased 8.4% in March, including 4.7 percentage points from Duane Reade stores. Despite the negative impact of this year’s later Easter, which fell on April 24 this year compared with April 4 last year, comparable store front-end sales increased 1.6%.
Calendar year-to-date sales were $17.98 billion, an increase of 9.1% from $16.48 billion in 2010. Fiscal 2011 year-to-date sales for the first 7 months were $42.12 billion, up 7.5% from $39.18 billion in fiscal 2010. Walgreens opened 12 stores during March (including three relocations), acquired one store and closed two.
As of March 31, 2011, Walgreens operated 8,169 locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
