Tyler, Texas — Brookshire Grocery Co. has partnered with the EPA to reduce refrigerant emissions and combat climate change.
Tyler, Texas — Grocery chain Brookshire Grocery Co. has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) GreenChill program. By partnering with the EPA, Brookshire pledges to take extra steps to reduce refrigerant emissions and combat climate change. The grocer plans to transition to environmentally safer refrigerants, reduce the total amount of refrigerant it uses, and adopt green refrigeration technologies and practices.
“This pledge demonstrates our ongoing effort to provide our customers with more than just a great place to shop,” said Brookshire President and CEO Rick Rayford, in a statement. “We are committed to the safety of our communities and our environment, and we believe that this partnership will help us exceed standard business practices and be responsible environmental stewards.”
The EPA launched the GreenChill program with the intent of helping grocers reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change. Grocers must certify stores individually, and their certification must be renewed each year. Currently, there are 86 GreenChill-certified grocery stores nationwide, and the companies participating in the program include Whole Foods Market, Fresh & Easy, Sprouts and Publix.
Brookshire Grocery Company is headquartered in Tyler, Texas, and currently operates store in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana under the brands Brookshire’s Food Stores, Super 1 Foods Stores, Olé Foods and FRESH by Brookshire’s. The company did not release information on how many of its stores will initially apply for certification.
