Los Angeles — Target Corporation has installed solar panels on the roof of its Napa, Calif., store, marking the 500th Target location to utilize solar energy.
In 2015, Target had set a goal to install solar panels on 500 of its stores by 2020, and now it has achieved that goal with this Napa, Calif., installation.
“At Target, we’re committed to making our operations even more sustainable to create a better future for our guests, team members and the planet,” says John Leisen, vice president of property management at Target. “Ambitious energy goals have helped us accelerate our progress and reach major milestones. And we’ll continue to invest in technologies, partners and resources to help us achieve even more.”
Target’s most recent installation represents its 500th location with onsite solar across its stores and distribution centers. In total, these installations have helped Target add more than 240 megawatts of solar across its buildings, equivalent to powering nearly 46,000 homes in the U.S. While meeting energy needs through solar is good for communities and the environment, it also helps Target reduce costs. A rooftop solar project generates enough energy to offset between 15% and 40% of a property’s energy needs, according to Target.
In addition, Target has an even more ambitious goal: to go 100% solar by 2030 — and it is already a quarter of the way there.
“Target’s recent announcements further prove just how much solar energy is surging ahead of fossil fuels,” says Nicki Zvik, founder of Green Solar Technologies. “When a massive company like Target puts their faith into solar to power their stores, it shows extreme confidence because they know that if they can’t power their stores adequately, they won’t be able to run their stores effectively.”
Adds Zvik: “Solar is the most abundant source of energy, and it’s powered solely by the sun’s infinite light making it far more reliable and far cheaper than the finite fossil fuels our Earth provides.”
