Chef Hugh Acheson to Debut By George Restaurant at Historic Candler Hotel in Atlanta

Atlanta — In July 2019, two-time James Beard Foundation Award-winning chef Hugh Acheson will debut By George, the flagship restaurant of The Candler Hotel (a Curio Collection by Hilton), offering an all-day menu of classic cuisine largely influenced by traditional French cooking. The name of the flagship restaurant reflects the work of the original architects of the historic Beaux Arts Candler building, circa 1906: George E. Murphy and George Stewart. Working alongside Acheson, chef de cuisine Ian Quinn will lead the kitchen and Beth Javis will head front-of-house as general manager.

Acheson, a 2019 James Beard Foundation Outstanding Restaurateur finalist, is known for his restaurants Five & Ten and The National in Athens, Ga.; and the popular Atlanta-based Empire State South and Spiller Park Coffee.

The 3,000-square-foot restaurant is designed by Callie Harris, senior interior designer of Beck Architecture. The motif is a commitment to uncovering the history of the building while modernizing the dining experience to complement the people who live, work and play downtown.

“I look forward to this next chapter in my culinary journey of adding to the overall excitement of hotel dining,” adds Acheson. The team I’ve assembled to launch By George is aligned in my commitment to make an impact on Downtown Atlanta’s dining scene while highlighting the gastronomic experiences that are often tucked away in a hotel.”

The historic 17-story Candler Building was the brainchild of Coca-Cola magnate and former Atlanta Mayor, Asa Griggs Candler. The building, now reimagined as a 265-room luxury hotel, will open this summer on Peachtree Street. The Candler will be the first Curio Collection by Hilton hotel in Atlanta, joining more than 65 other distinctive hotels and resorts in premier destinations around the world.

“Like the hotel’s high marble columns, twinkling chandeliers and original period elevators, By George will serve as an iconic reminder of a metropolitan polish that exists outside of trends, and will be an exciting culinary destination for the city’s original center in Downtown Atlanta,” says Martin Wormull, general manager of The Candler Hotel.

The Candler Hotel is an architectural masterpiece managed by Highgate, a premier hospitality and investment management company. For more information, visit www.thecandlerhotel.com.
