Goodlettsville, TN — Dollar General Corp. plans to open its first stores in California in 2012 following successful expansions in other western states such as Arizona and Colorado in recent years.
“Our California stores will mark a significant milestone for Dollar General, giving us a coast-to-coast presence for the first time,” says Rick Dreiling, chairman and CEO.
Currently, the brand is most dominant in the southern U.S. But Dollar General has grown quickly beyond its southern roots, sometimes opening two or three stores a day. It nearly doubled its store base in the last decade from 5,000 in 2000 to more than 9,500 today. Dollar General operates more company-owned retail stores than any other retailer in America.
The California announcement comes on the heels of the company’s planned expansions into three new states in 2011 — Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. California would be Dollar General’s 39th state.
