by Katie Lee

Mobile, Ala. — On August 31, 2016, The Wendy’s Company and its franchisee, the Wendco Group, will receive national recognition from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with a visit and tour of the newly rebuilt Wendy’s restaurant in Mobile, Ala., to showcase the company’s innovations in reducing energy use. Wendy’s has cut energy use by 37% at the Mobile location.

The facility will be highlighted as the company’s most energy-efficient location in the world and a “Showcase Project” for the Better Buildings Challenge, a DOE initiative designed to improve the lives of the American people by driving leadership in energy innovation. Through the Better Buildings Challenge, DOE partners with leaders in the public and private sectors to make the nation’s homes, commercial buildings and industrial plants more energy-efficient by accelerating investment and sharing successful best practices.

As the first restaurant company to include franchisees in the Better Buildings Challenge, The Wendy’s Company has committed to reduce energy consumption per transaction by 20% in company-owned restaurants by 2025. More than 500 Wendy’s company and franchisee operated restaurants are participating in the Better Buildings Challenge to date.

Executives on hand at the tour will be Maria Vargas, director, Better Buildings Challenge, Department of Energy; Abigail Pringle, chief development officer, The Wendy’s Company; Roger Webb, president, The Wendco Group; and Ivan Blackmon, director of facilities, The Wendco Group.

The most energy-efficient Wendy’s uses an ultra-high efficiency HVAC system, including new rooftop units (RTUs) with variable speed compressors and fans; 100% LED lighting for its exterior and interior; and energy-efficient, ENERGY STAR-certified commercial kitchen hood and kitchen equipment.
