Rockville, Md. — What could be said 20 years ago is even truer today: The U.S. food retailing business has never been more competitive. According to The Future of Food Retailing: Value Grocery Shopping in the U.S., a brand new report by market research firm Packaged Facts, there are a number of trends that are putting pressure on food retailers of all stripes, from supermarkets whose bread and butter is groceries to supercenters and drugstores for which food is a smaller but still crucial part of the product mix.

Lexington, Ky. — Fazoli’s has made three new appointments within its corporate finance department, including the hiring of David Hasler as chief financial officer. Hasler spent the past 10 years in finance roles with Walmart, most recently as senior director of global treasury.
Katy, Texas — Academy, Ltd. d/b/a Academy Sports + Outdoors, a premier sports, outdoor and lifestyle retailer, has named Michelle J. Gloeckler executive vice president, chief merchandising officer and president of Academy International Limited, its global sourcing entity, effective August 29, 2016.
Secaucus, N.J. — Vitamin Shoppe, Inc., a leading specialty retailer and manufacturer of nutritional products, has hired Jason Reiser as chief operating officer, effective July 11, 2016. He joins the Vitamin Shoppe from Dollar Tree, Inc. (successor to Family Dollar), where he was most recently executive vice president, chief merchandising officer for its Family Dollar business.
Minneapolis — Retail Merchandising Services, Inc. (RMS) has hired Don Cannon as director-sales support Walmart to continue RMS’s expansion into regional and national retailers and will be the lead account manager for Walmart and Walmart’s supplier partners.
Latham, N.Y. — Heather Barclay is joining DWM Facilities Maintenance as strategic account manager. She brings nearly 10 years of account management experience in the retail industry, previously managing product development and distribution for Wal-Mart, Burlington Coat Factory and DSW.
