Marshall, Mich. — Discount retailer Kmart is closing its final store in the state of Michigan, according to local media reports. The last remaining store is in Marshall, which is located about 45 miles south of Lansing. The store is expected to close in November. Kmart opened its first location in Garden City, Mich., in 1962. In its prime in the 1990s, Kmart operated more than 2,300 locations in the United States. Los Angeles — Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield plans to redevelop the long-vacated former Sears department store in the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles into a new dining and entertainment district. The empty store is located in the Westfield Topanga & The Village shopping center. Slated to open in late 2021, the new district will feature a chef-driven food hall, sit-down restaurants, lounges, cocktail bars, interior and exterior boutiques, and entertainment and recreational activities, as well as landscaped indoor and outdoor public spaces and plazas. Hoffman Estates, Ill. — Sears Holdings Corp. plans to close 96 underperforming stores by February 2020, according to the retailer’s parent company, Transform Holdco LLC. The closings will consist of 51 Sears stores and 45 Kmart stores, leaving 182 operational Sears and Kmart stores remaining in the United States. The closing stores are scattered throughout all regions of the country, including 28 located in California. Hoffman Estates, Ill. — On October 15, 2018, Sears Holdings Corporation and certain of its subsidiaries have filed voluntary petitions for Chapter 11 bankruptcy relief. Effective immediately, the company’s chairman and CEO, Edward S. Lampert, is stepping down from the CEO role. Also, the company will close 142 stores in addition to the previously announced 46 store closings.

The unique retail concept focuses on two of Sears’s strongest categories, appliances and mattresses, while continuing to offer the expertise and capability of its leading integrated services. The new store builds on the success of the first Sears Appliances & Mattresses store located in Pharr, Texas, which has been open since June 2017, as well as the Sears Appliances store, which opened in Ft. Collins, Colo., in 2016.
