Houston — Citing struggles stemming from the rise of e-commerce, fashion retailer Charming Charlie has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. During the Chapter 11 process, which was filed on December 11, 2017, the Houston-based fashion retailer plans to restructure its debt while maintaining and operating a majority of its stores, as well as its online platform.
Cincinnati — Terry Lundgren, executive chairman of Macy’s, Inc., will retire from the board of directors on January 31, 2018. The board has appointed Jeff Gennette, who has been CEO since March 2017, to the additional role of chairman effective January 31, 2018. This will complete the planned transition that was announced in June 2016. Marna Whittington remains lead independent director. Following Lundgren’s retirement, the board will have 10 directors.
Minneapolis — Target Corp. has agreed to acquire Shipt, Inc., a leading online same-day delivery platform, for $550 million in cash. Target will leverage its network of stores and Shipt’s proprietary technology platform and community of shoppers to quickly and efficiently bring same-day delivery to guests across the country. The acquisition significantly accelerates Target’s digital fulfillment efforts, bringing same-day delivery services to guests at approximately half of Target stores by early 2018. Mission Viejo, Calif. — Ralphs Grocery Company is re-opening its uniquely designed and totally remodeled Portola Plaza supermarket in North Mission Viejo, Calif. Following more than 3 months of ceiling-to-floor renovations, the supermarket is set to celebrate its grand re-opening on December 13, 2017.
Salt Lake City — Sundance, a premier lifestyle retailer of women’s and men’s apparel, footwear, jewelry, accessories, art and home décor, has opened its newest store in San Diego. This store, located in Westfield University Town Center, opened in November 2017.
Phoenix — PetSmart has reached a major milestone by opening its 1,600th store in its expanding store footprint across North America. The 1,600th store opened Thanksgiving week and is located in El Paso, Texas. In addition, the pet specialty retailer opened its Casper, Wyo., store in October, marking PetSmart’s presence now in all 50 U.S. states.
